About Us
It all started way back in 1983 when Phil Walsh was working as Head of a Physics department in a London school.
Phil Walsh - PSU Base founder
Needing to buy some power supplies for his Science Department, Phil Walsh looked through all the usual catalogues but was disappointed to find that the units on offer were too expensive and possibly not serviceable due to being manufactured overseas. Therefore he designed and built his own units. Over the following year, several other schools saw these power supplies and ordered sets for themselves.
Phil continued making power supplies and started supplying some of the UK’s leading educational science suppliers under the brand name Electrosound. At this time the range was expanded with Phil and his wife Anna, moving into their first factory, whilst Phil was still working full time as a Physics teacher! Eventually, the business grew so large that the husband & wife team devoted all their time and energies to Electrosound.
Fast forwarding to 2018 and after many years of developing new products, under the Electrosound and latterly the Irwin brand, Phil decided he wanted to move in a new direction with a modern, compact, user-friendly range and so, in February 2018, he formed PSU Base. All of his 30+ years of experience in design and manufacturing have gone into a new range of power supplies and products with enhanced features, but still with the build quality and reliability for which the previous units were famous.
For personal reasons in 2019 Phil needed to step back from the day to day running of PSU Base, so Phil joined forces with Phil Tomlinson, owner of Breckland Scientific and LogIT World, the datalogging manufacturer. Both Phils believe over reliance on the far east and India for science teaching apparatus has decreased the UKs competitive advantage for well designed, good value and reliable products. PSU Base is committed to investment in new product development to ensure the UK has a strong manufacturing capability of science teaching apparatus.
PSU Base manufactures in Staffordshire with Phil Walsh carrying out the development of new products and looking for new opportunities to supply schools with useful and effective products to help teach science.
A young company with a long history.
